Christchurch | Casual | Work that directly improves the lives of animals
Our Christchurch Centre is looking for a Casual Veterinary Nurse to join our team and provide high-quality clinical care to animals in SPCA's care. You'll work alongside our veterinarians and wider Animal Services team, supporting everything from routine treatments and nursing care through to surgical procedures and emergency situations.

- Hours: As and when required to cover leave and busy periods
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Veterinary Nurse with SPCA, you'll play an important role in ensuring animals receive the highest standard of care throughout their time with us.
- Provide high-quality veterinary nursing care, assessment and treatment to animals in SPCA's care
- Assist veterinarians with anaesthetics, treatments, surgery and other clinical procedures
- Monitor animals, identify concerns and provide appropriate nursing support, including in emergency situations
- Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure all treatments and interventions are documented appropriately
- Support fosterers, volunteers and students with safe animal care, while maintaining high standards of hygiene, infection control and animal welfare
- Contribute to the wider Centre team, including animal enrichment, owner education and supporting animals through their SPCA journey
Every day can look a little different in a shelter environment, so you'll need to be comfortable adapting to changing priorities and working across a range of cases.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- A Veterinary Nursing qualification and experience working in clinical practice
- Experience working effectively in a busy clinical environment with competing priorities and deadlines
- A sound understanding of veterinary nursing principles and a willingness to develop your knowledge of shelter medicine
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, including the ability to work with volunteers and students
- Good organisation, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- The ability to remain calm, professional and empathetic in challenging situations
- A full, current New Zealand driver's licence
Experience in shelter medicine or animal welfare would be an advantage, but we're also interested in nurses who are keen to learn and develop their skills in this area.
