ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting opportunity for a Community Support Officer to join our Animal Services team in Mangere, Auckland.
This role is permanent, full time, role where you are rostered across Monday to Sunday, 7.30 am – 4.30 pm.
You will be responding to enquiries from the public - face to face, over the phone and via email in a helpful, timely and professional manner. You will be handling animals – emergency, husbandry, hygiene. You will be the hub, the oracle, the primary person for our animal ambulance and centre-related dispatches.
You will be a key part of our Animal Ambulance team where you will triage calls and rescue animals. You could be rescuing a dog who was hit by a car, capturing a group of chickens on the run or picking up a litter of kittens left in the community. You could be transporting sick and vulnerable animals from our communities to our centres and vet clinics to ensure they get the care they need.
You will help organise and participate in centre events like vaccination drives, speak to school groups about animal care and attend community and partner‑organisation events to represent SPCA and promote animal welfare.
ABOUT YOU
You’re an animal advocate, you are passionate about animal welfare, care and education. Our vision, purpose and values resonate with you and you have a love for working with both humans and animals.
You will also have –
- Animal handling experience and knowledge
- A passion for working within your community
- The ability to think on your feet
- A positive and friendly approach to customers, animals and team members
- High empathy and resilience
- Experience working in a busy environment where multitasking and variety are key
- A clean full drivers license

Our Community Support Team run our animal ambulance, they work in our communities to educate and provide support on animal wellbeing. They build support in our communities by attending community events to support animal welfare initiatives.
In our environment you get to see the best and the worst. It is a rewarding, fulfilling, and essential sector, as well as demanding, heartbreaking and physical. It takes a special kind of person to do this type of work but what you get back can really fill your cup.
