ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting opportunity in our Science & Advocacy team for a permanent full-time Scientific Officer. This a fully remote, work from home role working Monday – Friday 40 hours per week.
As part of the Science & Advocacy team, this position supports SPCA’s mission by providing high-quality, evidence-based advice to improve animal welfare. The role contributes to advocacy and policy initiatives, ensuring SPCA’s positions and advocacy campaigns are grounded in robust animal welfare science. The officer supports projects and initiatives aimed at improving animal welfare, communicates scientific evidence to internal teams and external stakeholders, and works collaboratively to achieve meaningful and lasting improvements for animals in New Zealand.
Key Responsibilities
- Advocacy Support
- Contribute evidence-based input to SPCA advocacy priorities.
- Prepare written and oral submissions on animal welfare to government, regulatory, or industry consultations.
- Research and evidence
- Undertake literature reviews, analyse technical data, and construct scientific reports
- Prepare scientific and technical information and advice on animal welfare issues.
- Communication and engagement
- Present scientific evidence clearly to internal teams and external stakeholders
- Maintain effective working relationships with key partners, stakeholders, and research networks
ABOUT YOU
We are looking for someone who has:
- Completed postgraduate study ion animal welfare science, policy, or related research. PhD highly desirable.
- Experience in Animal welfare science, research, policy development, or advocacy
- A sound understanding of animal welfare science, legislation, and best practice.
- Experience contributing to advocacy campaigns, consultations, or stakeholder engagement is desirable.
- The ability to prioritise, multitask and meet expected deadlines.
- A passion for animal welfare and alignment with SPCA’s vision and values.
