ABOUT US
The SPCA helps protect over 30,000 animals every year. By rescuing, rehabilitating, sheltering and advocating for animals, we are directly improving their lives. Our Animal Services teams run our 28 Centres, from Kerikeri to Invercargill, and they are essential in us being able to do the work we do.

Our Centres are working hard rescuing, caring for and rehoming animals in need. They are the face of SPCA in their communities, working to create real and sustainable change for the wellbeing of animals. Our Levin team is a small but mighty team. We are a passionate about what we do, we support each other by jumping in head first to help and we have high clinical standards and we prioritise animal welfare and community connection.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Nurse to join our team. This is a hands-on, varied role where you will play a key role in ensuring animals in our care receive the highest standard of both medical treatment and day-to-day care throughout their journey from intake through to adoption.

  • SPCA Levin Centre
  • Permanent Part-time / 32 hours per week
  • Sunday to Wednesday 8:30am - 5:00pm  

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality daily care, enrichment, socialisation and husbandry for animals in SPCA care, ensuring welfare needs are consistently met
  • Support veterinary procedures including preparation for surgery, anaesthesia monitoring, assisting with treatments, and administering prescribed medications
  • Ensure our animal enclosures and runs are clean 
  • Monitor, assess, and record animal health, behaviour and recovery progress, escalating concerns to veterinarians or senior staff as required
  • Maintain accurate records across animal management systems, ensuring documentation is timely, compliant and up to date
  • Support adoption processes and provide excellent customer service to the public, including enquiries in person, online and over the phone
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and fosterers to support animal rehabilitation, behaviour plans and rehoming outcomes
  • Maintain a safe, clean and compliant environment by following SPCA policies, procedures and Health & Safety requirements at all times

ABOUT YOU
You are passionate about animal welfare and committed to delivering both high-quality clinical care and compassionate day-to-day animal support. You are calm under pressure, adaptable, and confident working across both veterinary and shelter environments.

You will also have:

  • Qualification and experience in veterinary nursing 
  • Strong animal handling skills and confidence working with a range of species 
  • Experience assisting in veterinary surgeries and procedures, including medication administration
  • Excellent communication with experience working with the community in a customer facing role 
  • Strong attention to detail with accurate record keeping and administration ability 
  • Ability to work in a busy, fast-paced environment with competing priorities 
  • High levels of empathy, resilience and professionalism
