The SPCA helps protect over 30,000 animals every year. By rescuing, rehabilitating, sheltering and advocating for animals, we are directly improving their lives. Our Animal Services teams run our 28 Centres, from Kerikeri to Invercargill and they are essential in us being able to do the work we do.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re looking for a compassionate and skilled Veterinarian to join our SPCA Christchurch Centre team. In this role, you’ll provide high-quality veterinary care to animals within our village while supporting SPCA’s mission to improve animal welfare across Aotearoa. Working alongside a passionate team of veterinary professionals and animal care staff, you’ll play a key role in ensuring animals receive the treatment, care and advocacy they deserve.
As a Veterinarian, you will deliver a high professional standard of veterinary care including surgical procedures, consultations, and medical case management for animals in SPCA care. You’ll also contribute to animal welfare initiatives, support investigations where required, and help maintain best-practice clinical and infection control standards. This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same — from providing life-saving treatment to supporting animal welfare prosecutions.
- Permanent Part Time Position
- Monday, Tuesday and Friday between 8:45am to 5:15pm plus working every 5th weekend (we have some flexibility on the days, you tell us what works for you!)
- 24 hrs per week plus 11 hours every 5th weekend
What you’ll do:
- Provide high-quality care alongside a veterinary nurse for animals in SPCA’s care.
- Work independently, with support from our Head Vet when needed.
- Perform routine and non-routine surgeries, including desexing procedures.
- Handle a variety of animals (domestic, un-socialised, and wildlife).
- Adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic environment while prioritising both animal welfare.
- Align with SPCA’s values, demonstrating empathy in all interactions.
- Build strong relationships with staff, volunteers, stakeholders, and suppliers.

ABOUT YOU
You thrive in a busy, dynamic environment, handling a diverse caseload in a well-equipped clinic with everything you need. With resilience, empathy, and excellent communication skills, you’ll navigate the physical demands of the role while handling emotional situations with ease.
What you’ll bring:
- A full veterinary qualification with current professional registration.
- Solid experience in clinical practice.
- Experience performing routine and non-routine surgical procedures
- Competence with computer systems; experience with Ezyvet is a plus.
- Experience or understanding of shelter medicine (preferred but not essential).
- Ideally, experience in high-volume spay/neuter programmes.
