The SPCA helps protect over 30,000 animals every year. By rescuing, rehabilitating, sheltering and advocating for animals, we are directly improving their lives. Our Animal Services teams run our 28 Centres, from Kerikeri to Invercargill and they are essential in us being able to do the work we do.

Our Centres are a hive of activity where every day is dedicated to animal welfare, community connection and making a real difference. We have Centre Managers, Vets, Vet Nurses, Animal Attendants, Foster Coordinators, Customer Services Officers and everything in between. Our people are kind, resilient, customer centric and calm under pressure.
THE ROLE
We have a rewarding opportunity for a qualified Veterinary Nurse to join our SPCA Christchurch Centre.
- Fixed-Term - Full-Time
- 32 hours per week with 1 in 6 weekends on rotation
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide professional vet nursing care and support across a variety of animals (domestic, un-socialised, and wildlife).
- Assist vets with surgeries, treatments and the preparation of surgical environments.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of documentation, reports, and records.
- Support foster carers and volunteers to provide safe and consistent care.
- Deliver animal enrichment and health programs in line with SPCA’s welfare standards.
- Maintain hygiene protocols and ensure a safe environment for animals, staff, and the public.
- Build strong relationships with staff, volunteers, stakeholders, and suppliers.

ABOUT YOU
You’re a calm, confident, and compassionate vet nurse who thrives in a dynamic team. You’re ready to be hands-on, whether it’s prepping for surgery, advising a fosterer, or helping a scared stray feel safe.
Skills & Experience:
- A recognised Veterinary Nursing qualification with current registration.
- Experience in a clinical setting (shelter medicine is a bonus).
- Strong organisational, communication and multitasking skills.
- Comfortable using computer systems (Ezyvet experience a plus).
- Ability to educate and support others in animal welfare best practices.
- Commitment to high standards of animal care, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
