The SPCA helps protect over 30,000 animals every year. By rescuing, rehabilitating, sheltering and advocating for animals, we are directly improving their lives. Our Animal Services teams run our 28 Centres, from Kerikeri to Invercargill and they are essential in us being able to do the work we do.

Our Centre’s are working hard rescuing, caring for and rehoming animals in need. They are the face of the SPCA in their communities, working to create real and sustainable change for the wellbeing of animals. The Centre’s are run by a bunch of passionate people, from Centre Managers to Animal Attendants, who prioritise animal welfare and community connection.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting opportunity at our SPCA Christchurch Centre for a:
- Casual Animal Attendant
- Casual Hours as required to cover leave, busy periods, and weekends
As a Casual Animal Attendant, you will be responsible for ensuring that all animals in the centre receive the highest standard of care, supporting their journey from arrival to adoption.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily care for animals, ensuring their health, safety, and wellbeing.
- Ensure all animals are appropriately housed, fed, exercised, and socialised.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the animal database.
- Assist with routine veterinary visits, including preparing animals and administering medication as required.
- Monitor and report on animal health, behaviour, and welfare concerns.
- Coordinate and collaborate with staff and volunteers to improve animal pathways through the centre.
- Handle adoption enquiries in person, over the phone, and via the website.
- Work with other departments to ensure animal areas operate efficiently and organisational goals are met.
- Assist during busy periods, weekends, and to cover staff leave as required.
ABOUT YOU
You’re an animal advocate, you are passionate about animal welfare, care and education. Our vision, purpose and values resonate with you and you have a love for working with both humans and animals.
You will also have:
- Animal handling experience and knowledge
- Experience working with volunteers and increasing volunteer and foster numbers and capability
- Influencing and conflict management skills
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- The ability to think on your feet
- A positive and friendly approach to customers, animals and team members
- High empathy and resilience
- Experience working in a busy environment where multitasking is key
- Experience working with the community in a customer facing role
