ABOUT THE ROLE

We have an exciting opportunity for an Animal Attendant to join our SPCA Hokitika Centre.

  • Permanent, full-time role
  • Wednesday – Sunday, 8:00am – 4:30pm

This role is rewarding, challenging, and essential. You’ll see the best and worst of animal care and it can be heartbreaking at times, but it’s equally fulfilling. It takes a special kind of person to thrive in this role, and the rewards are deeply satisfying.

As an Animal Attendant, you will:

  • Provide daily care, feeding, enrichment, and exercise for animals in our care
  • Monitor animal health and behaviour, administering medication and reporting changes promptly
  • Assist with veterinary treatments and rehabilitation plans under direction of the Animal Care Lead or Vet
  • Support potential adopters, fosterers, and volunteers with compassion and professionalism
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date animal records in our database
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and enriching environment for all animals
  • Educate and engage with the public on animal welfare and adoption
  • Collaborate with your team to ensure the Centre runs smoothly and efficiently

ABOUT YOU

You’re an animal advocate who is passionate about animal welfare, care, and education. You bring empathy, resilience, and a positive attitude to everything you do. Our vision, purpose, and values resonate with you and you love working with both humans and animals.

You will also bring:

  • Proven experience handling and caring for animals
  • Sound understanding of animal behaviour, enrichment, and welfare needs
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Experience working with volunteers or in a community-facing role (desirable)
  • Ability to multitask and stay calm under pressure
  • A strong work ethic, high attention to detail, and willingness to get hands-on
  • A current driver’s licence (manual preferred)
  • Relevant animal care or welfare qualification (desirable but not essential)
